OFFICERS ELECTED FOR WSU EXTENSION AFFILIATE OF WASHINGTON STATE ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES (WSAC)
The Extension county chairs conference coincided with the 2nd annual Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC) and Washington Association of County Officials (WACO) held September 29 October 2 in Seattle. Extension became an Affiliate of WSAC in June and has now approved bylaws and elected officers. GROUND BREAKING FOR UW CENTER FOR URBAN HORTICULTURE
On October 1st, a ground breaking ceremony was held on the University of Washington campus for the construction of the Center for Urban Horticulture which was destroyed May, 2001 in an arson fire. The WSU Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Resource Center was housed at the center. Thanks to support from the University of Washington, the King County Master Gardeners, and private gifts, the rebuilding can begin. Gifts from the Seattle Foundation will assist in equipping the Resource Center and an additional $400,000 in private support is sought to meet the priority needs of the MG Resource Center. Watch for the brochure regarding the WSU Cooperative Extension MG Resource Center at the UW Center for Urban Horticulture. For more information contact Kori Thol, CAHE Development and Alumni and Relations or the King County Master Gardeners.

MASTER GARDENER MOA REQUIREMENTS
Rod Tinnemore and Ed Adams will be sending a letter to all county chairs in the new future regarding their work with the WSU office of the Attorney General on our behalf regarding the Master Gardener logo and program operations. Expect instructions for each MG organization, no matter what their IRS designation or status, on establishing a MOA with WSU through the local Cooperative Extension Office if the MG group uses any WSU resources (use of the WSU MG name and logo, staff time, office space, office equipment and supplies and use of any WSU internet networks, etc). These agreements are necessary for WSU to comply with Washington law, including the Washington State Constitution's prohibition on a "gift of state funds" and the Ethics in Public Service Act.

MASTER GARDENER LOGO TRADEMARKED
The Washington State University Research Foundation would like to congratulate the WSU Master Gardener Program on obtaining a trademark for their logo, which issued on May 19, 2003.

4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM STRATEGIC PLAN WORKBOOK
The 4-H Youth Development Program Strategic Plan has been completed and is ready for distribution. The strategic plan is being distributed as a workbook for county faculty and program coordinators at Program Days. If you are not able to attend Program Days please contact Susan in the State 4-H Office for your copy. All county 4-H faculty and program coordinators should have a copy. Additionally, the Strategic Plan will be distributed at the State 4-H Forum later this month.

USDA FOOD SAFETY VAN VISITS WESTERN WASHINGTON
The USDA Food Safety Mobile is coming to Vancouver and Mt. Vernon as part of the Harvest Festivals being held October 4 and 5th. It will be in Vancouver at the WSU Research and Extension Center on Saturday October 4th and in Mt. Vernon on Sunday October 5th. Thanks to Sandy Brown and Joan Austin for scheduling the Food Safety Mobile visits in Washington State.

More information and pictures of the Food Safety mobile are available on the USDA Web site, then click on the Food Safety Mobile graphic.

The USDA Food Safety Mobile is a 35-foot recreational vehicle traveling coast-to-coast promoting the food safety messages - clean, separate, cook and chill. It is out to educate and reinforce the importance of handling food safely. There will be demonstrations on using thermometers, displays on safe food handling and costumed characters (Thermy the Thermometer and a Giant Green Bacteria) that will entertain the children and adults alike.

In addition, in Vancouver "Germ City" will be set up and staffed by newly trained Germ Buster volunteers. They will be showing children and adults how to properly wash their hands after visiting the Petting Farm.
