WASHINGTON
STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
As we continue to move forward with the model of extension across
the university, we have discussed with the Provost and others in
central administration dropping cooperative and shortening
our name to Washington State University Extension. Im sure
you are aware many states have already done so. We have had a similar
favorable response to Washington State University Extension at the
recent westside and eastside extension county chairs conferences.
So where are we currently? WSU Communications and Marketing is revising
the logo to meet integrated marketing. We anticipate
a new design very soon so that we can have this in place for July
1. After July 1st we will phase in the new logo when materials are
printed. No need to throw out anything. The College of Agriculture
and Home Economics (CAHE) Information Department will provide the
leadership regarding new letterhead, business cards, Web page graphics,
etc.
Additionally,
we were informed in early February that the federal penalty mail
process is changing based on June 2002 legislation. The new penalty
mail guidelines are effective October 1, 2003. We are still sorting
out the implications for our budget (when the federal allocation
will be credited to our state, for example). We do know the penalty
mail envelopes will also need to be changed. Given the changes to
our logo design, the timing is good for us.
Watch
for future updates on both the WSU Extension and penalty mail.
DIVERSITY
AWARD
Diversity is becoming more and more important to Extension in a
number of ways. Recognizing the critical role that diversity plays
in an effective organization, the Extension Diversity Task Force
developed a national diversity award in 1991 that most of you are
probably familiar with. The award was designed to acknowledge accomplishments
in achieving organizational change to support diversity, pluralism
and innovation in programs that impact Extension and its audiences.
The Extension Diversity Task Force, a part of ECOP's Personnel SubCommittee,
would like to announce the 2003 Call for Nominations for the National
Diversity Award. Attached are details of the award, including application
format, deadline, submission guidelines, and other information.
This and other information, including a list of past recipients,
are available on the National
Diversity Center.
Please
don't hesitate to contact us or others on the Diversity Task Force
if you have any questions or need further information. Source: Ruben

WSU
CONFERENCE TELEBRIDGE
The new WSU conference bridge has been completely installed and
tested. Information Technology will be offering the first training
session in early May for those who would like the ability to schedule
their own conferences and for those who would like to learn more
about the new system. Since the new bridge is fully operational
we will be cancelling our contract with ClearOne Communications
effective May 1, 2003. If you are still using their services please
contact our phone desk at 509-335-3663 at your earliest convenience
to reschedule your meeting on the WSU equipment. Please contact
the phone desk if you have any questions. Dave
Ostrom.

U.S.
ORGANIC FARMING IN 2000-2001: ADOPTION OF CERTIFIED SYSTEMS
U.S. farmland managed under organic systems expanded rapidly throughout
the 1990s, and that pace has continued as farmers strive to meet
consumer demand in both local and national markets. The U.S. Department
of Agriculture (USDA) implemented national organic standards on
organic production and processing in October 2002, following more
than a decade of development. The new uniform standards are expected
to facilitate further growth in the organic farm sector. This
report updates USDA estimates of land farmed with organic practices
for 2000 and 2001, and provides new estimates on the number of
certified organic operations in each State. See http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/aib780/.
