NELD APPLICATION ONLINE
The National Extension Leadership Development (NELD) program is soliciting applications for its next class. The two-year commitment begins in September 2003. Applicants should have some experience in leadership activities, and be mid-career or relatively new to their leadership positions. The application is posted on the Extension Web site. If you are interested in participating in the program, please complete the application by June 2nd, 2003 and submit to Louise Parker. The Extension Administrative Team will choose one applicant to send forward to the national review team by the end of June. If you have questions about NELD, please contact former NELD interns Louise Parker, Ed Adams, Louise Turner, Carris Booker, Mike Tate, or Linda Fox.

CENTER TO BRIDGE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE "RIBBON CUTTING" CEREMONY
On Monday, April 21, the official opening and "ribbon cutting" ceremony will occur in Spokane for the new office suite location of the Center to Bridge the Digital Divide (CBDD). The location is 120 North Stevens, Suite 200, downtown Spokane. Representative George R. Nethercutt will lead the ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:00 pm, and reception follows from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The CBDD relocated from the WSU Spokane campus in January to the North Stevens address.

NE DISTRICT PROVOST TOUR POSTPONED
Provost Bob Bates is recovering from major back surgery. Having said that, a three-day bus tour in the NE District in mid-June is not conducive to his continued long-term recovery. Coupled with the fact that the state legislative session and budget discussions are likely to continue into June, we have decided that postponing the NE District Provost until next spring is warranted. The SW District Tour in October remains on schedule.

ITEMS OF INTEREST ON THE CE HOME PAGE
Check out the Cooperative Extension home page for these new items of interest.

First, at <ext.wsu.edu> you'll find links to take you to the Big Cat Awards and Hall of Champions (October 2002); the spring 2003 issues of CE Focus; and the NELD Intern Application.

Second, two recent PowerPoint presentations are available for you to review. Go to http://ext.wsu.edu/ce.cahe/talks/ and scroll down to "Presentations by Director Tate." There you will find his presentation to the county chairs earlier this month, and you'll find his presentation to WSU Faculty Senate, which occurred February 27th.

RREA STRATEGIC PLANNING WORKSHOP IN DENVER
Nearly 90 extension educators and administrators spent 2-1/2 days in a fast-paced, intensive strategic planning workshop for the Renewable Resources Extension Act (RREA) in Denver, CO, recently. They represented 46 of the 1862 land-grant universities (LGUs), 13 of the 1890 LGUs, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The outcomes of the workshop included draft mission, vision, and guiding principle statements; an internal program analysis and an external environment assessment; and 43 natural resource and organizational issues. Writing teams were formed and are now at work on the issues and Cooperative Extension System responses. The workshop planning committee consisting of two representatives from each of the five regions and three CSREES program leaders volunteered to transition into an implementation team. The draft plan will be presented to CSREES in time for consideration in the FY 2005 budget process. For more information, contact Eric Norland, CSREES national program leader, forest biology.

COUNTY BUDGET PREPARATION GUIDELINES ONLINE
A reminder to all county chairs, the county budget preparation guidelines are now online! Training was provided at the chairs conference and there is no planned additional email or follow-up communication. If you missed the county chairs conference and the training provided by Linda Fox, contact your District Director. The Web site is <bfo.cahe.wsu.edu>.
