4-H FOUNDATION DIRECTOR INTERVIEWS
A national search has been conducted and three candidates for the 4-H Foundation Director will be interviewed February 24 and February 25. The interviews will take place February 24 in Pullman. In Pullman, you can hear the candidates' presentations and visit with them in Hulbert Hall Room 409, Ms. Martha Ruest at 10:30-11:15 am and Mr. Al Hove at 1:00-1:45 pm. Mr. Larry Koch's presentation is 3:30 in Hulbert 223.

The following day, February 25, the candidates will repeat their presentations in Puyallup (Chicona Room) and those sessions will be broadcast via WECN and video stream. The Tuesday, February 25 presentations will be Martha Ruest at 11:00-11:45 am, Larry Koch 2:00-2:45, and Al Hover from 4:00-4:45 pm.

Please plan on attending in person, via WECN or viewing the video stream. To receive an advisory ballot and candidate resumes, please contact Linda Williams at 253-445-4550 and she'll delightedly fax the information to you.

Your active participation will help to ensure a strengthened future for the 4-H program through exceptional fund development.

SEN. LARRY SHEAHAN HONORS WSU'S 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
OLYMPIA... Sen. Larry Sheahan, R-Spokane, today honored Washington State University's 4-H Youth Development Program with Senate Resolution 8610." The 4-H program helps our young people become productive members of society by fostering self-esteem, improving communications and developing decision making skills," Sheahan said. "I've been a member of 4-H, and it taught me some important life lessons."

The WSU program was established in 1914. In 2002, more than 90,000 young people participated throughout Washington in the program. In addition, the 4-H program had more than 10,000 volunteers statewide who donated an average of 200 hours of service last year.

"The program fosters community service and civic leadership," Sheahan said. "Today the Senate honored more than 350 4-H members that were visiting the Capitol as part of the 4-H Know Your Government program."

CBDD PROJECTS CONTINUE TO EXPAND IN AFRICA
The Center to Bridge the Digital Divide (CBDD) has received a competitive award from the Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development to implement a K-12 teacher training initiative in South Africa in Cooperation with the University of the Witwatersrand. The award is a component of the Center's NetTel@Africa initiative and focused on preparing K-12 teachers to gain best practice skills in utilizing available computer technology in effective teaching.An example of university-wide extension in practice, the Center's Alison Olzendam, affiliated with the WSU College of Education in Spokane,will provide leadership to the ALO initiative. South African President Mbeki has announce k-12 teacher training in the effective use of technology as a national priority. Maria Beebe, CBDD Project Director for the NetTel@Africa initiative is presently on assignment in South Africa and has been requested by President Mbeki to assist the preparation of that nation's e-learning policy and program directions. Congratulations!

CBDD REQUESTS YOUR HELP
The Center to Bridge the Digital Divide (CBDD) is requesting help to assemble a list of email/contact addresses for leaders of programs or initiatives that engage the use of communications to support more effective public safety and homeland security measures.This contact information collected will solely be used by our Center to help promote participation in its survey, which can viewed at: http://CTLSilhouette.wsu.edu/surveys/ZS10696. The purpose of this survey is to establish a searchable data base providing Washington State public safety professionals with information on current active public safety initiatives. Examples include:

  • Inventories of critical infrastructure
  • Efforts supporting interoperable communication
  • Local first responders programs/projects
  • Medical, law enforcement or transportation public safety programs/projects
  • Other programs/projects impacting emergency response and mitigation

The database will be made available to public safety professionals with interest in identifying parallel or complementary emergency response and mitigation initiatives.Please provide suggestions of potential contacts to Smith Lutu.

NATIONAL EXTENSION DIVERSITY CENTER
Link to the National Extension Diversity Center and collaborate with Extension professionals to create new ways of effectively serving our diverse society and improve your own diversity skills. This is a great Web site with many resources. For example, there are diversity training activities; listen to stories, watch and discuss movies, and read articles by your peers about the ever changing topic of diversity.

Key topics include:

  • Employing diverse staff
  • Staff development
  • Reaching audiences
  • Organizational change

In addition, they are looking for your contributions through a peer reviewed process. The virtual diversity web site is sponsored by ECOP/PODC's subcommittee on Extension Diversity. The contact is Ann Schauber, Oregon State University Extension.
