WELD REPRESENTATIVES

Two WSU CE representatives have been selected through a competitive process to join the next two-year class of the Western Extension Leadership Development (WELD) program. Congratulations to Mark Heitstuman, Asotin County Chair, and Debra Kollock, Learning Center Coordinator, Colville.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE CAHE ALUMNI & DEVELOPMENT OFFICE
The CAHE Alumni & Development Office staff, including Patrick Kramer, Director, are dedicated to provide you with resources to acquire private funding for the College of Agriculture and Home Economics, Cooperative Extension, and 4-H. Here's an update on what's happening in alumni and development. This month a $150,000 cash gift was received for the Otto and Doris Amen Dryland Research Fund. King County has applied for funding to the Fortune Family Foundation and are awaiting a decision on that proposal. The Microsoft Corporation is interested in funding the "Know Your Government Conference" at $100,000. The Harold R. Brown Foundation will become a Benefactor this year with their most recent gift to Plant Pathology for $5,000, giving them a cumulative total of $100,000. Work is progressing a gift from the King, Piece and Skagit County Master Gardener Foundations to recognize them this year as Benefactors. So how are we doing? The CAHE is 45.6% of its $11.5 million goal; 4-H is 182% of its $500,000 goal.

"JOE" READERSHIP
The Journal of Extension (JOE) is the peer-reviewed electronic journal of the Cooperative Extension System. It seeks to expand and update the research and knowledge base for Extension professionals and other adult educators to improve their effectiveness. Use and readership of the Journal of Extension continues to increase. Currently, page views average over 3,580 per day, double the number of daily page views in 2000. This totals 1,310,318 page views for the year. In 2002, JOE attracted readers from 139 countries.

On the JOE web site, http://www.joe.org/, under About JOE, Usage Statistics, check the "Top 50 Most Read Articles" to appreciate the diversity of our readers' interests. In the western region, Oregon State, Washington State University, University of Idaho, University of Arizona, Utah State and University of Wyoming are among the top 50 U.S. institutions accessing the Journal in 2002. In 2002, 55% of submissions were acceptable for blind review or publication. Of those in this category, breakdown was as follows: 1.7% were rejected; 7% use ideas and start over; 29.8% major revision required; 49.1% minor revision required; and 14% no revision required.

The Board of Directors and Purdue University signed a Memorandum of Agreement for Laura Hoelscher to continue as editor of the Journal through 2005. In addition, JOE server operations have been integrated with the Ohio State University Extension Computer Operations, providing better back-up and more secure technical support.

In order to promote and provide easy access to JOE, I encourage you to link the JOE to your state's Extension web site.
