SURVEY OF LATINOS
A comprehensive new survey of Latinos in the United States reveals an array of attitudes, values and experiences that is distinct from non-Hispanics. Latinos take different views than non- Hispanics on what it takes to be successful in a U.S. workplace, and Hispanics overall show a strong attachment to the Latin American nations where they or their ancestors were born. While Latinos generally take a positive view of life in the United States, many express concerns about the moral values Latino children are acquiring here. The survey was done by the Pew Hispanic Center and the Kaiser Family Foundation. The complete report, 'The 2002 National Survey of Latinos" can be viewed at http://www.pewhispanic.org. The Pew Hispanic Center's mission is to improve understanding of the diverse Hispanic population in the United States and to chronicle Latinos' growing impact on the nation. The Center strives to inform debate on critical issues through dissemination of its research to policymakers, business leaders, academic institutions and the media.

PASCO SITE FOR USDA INFORMATIONAL MEETING
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is pleased to present a series of public meetings entitled, Briefing on the 2002 Farm Bill & USDA Programs and Services.

It will enable the Department to interact with a broad spectrum of customers, including small farmers, growers, landowners, municipalities, community-based organizations, and under-served customers, particularly minorities and women. There are twelve USDA agencies participating (Agricultural Marketing Service; Agricultural Research Service; Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service; Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service; Farm Service Agency; Food Safety and Inspection Service; Food and Nutrition Service; Foreign Agricultural Service; Forest Service; Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration; USDA Office of Outreach; Natural Resources Conservation Service; Risk Management Agency; and Rural Development). TRAVEL DOLLARS FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
This is a good time of year to make plans for professional development, including the Galaxy II conference we've mentioned in previous Extension Updates. Cooperative Extension supports employee engagement in appropriate out-of-state travel and conferences to the extent this is part of a professional development plan. Refer to the "State Support" section in the Policies and Procedures Web site. Program Directors, District Directors and Department Chairs will handle requests for additional financial support of travel to meetings beyond that already budgeted by county, district, or departmental resources on a case-by-case basis. You should identify travel for professional development in their Plan of Action and discuss with your direct supervisors at the time of your annual review.

FEBRUARY 10: END OF PAPER PAYSTUBS
This should be a surprise to no one since it was announced in early December: Washington State University employees who are paid through direct deposit will no longer receive paper paystub receipts, starting Feb. 10. Instead, your paystub information will be posted on a secure university website. This does not apply to people who receive their paychecks at home through the mail. This move will save the university roughly $45,000 per year in paper, envelopes, printing, postage and staff time. And it will provide employees with an easy-to-manage-and-retrieve data system.

Every payday, an e-mail message will alert employees that their pay has been electronically deposited and that their online paystub details are available via WSU's Payroll and Benefits Services website at www.wsu.edu/webpbs. Questions questions can be directed to WSU Payroll Services at 509-335-1277.

How exactly do I locate my paycheck information on the Web?

  1. From the WSU home page (www.wsu.edu), select either the home page for Faculty & Staff or Current Students.
  2. the eInfoCenter button on the top right-hand side of the Web page.
  3. Expand the categories on the eInfoCenter page by clicking on the words "Expand All Categories" on the top line, top left-hand side of the screen.
  4. Scroll down to Payroll on the left-hand side of the webpage and click on "View E/S" to view and/or print your earnings statement.
  5. Input your network ID and password and click on the OK button.
