EXTENSION
ENGAGED in 2003
The
satellite series, "Extension Engaged" which premiered
last November, will return beginning January of 2003, with a program
about the "Food $ense" Extension educational program.
The program will take place from 10:00-11:00 am on January 16, and
will feature Food $ense coordinators Elaine Mays and Kathleen Manenica
in an exploration of this Extension nutrition education program.
The
program takes place in room T-101 of the Food Science and Human
Nutrition building from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and interested faculty
are invited to attend. The program can be viewed via satellite on
G-3, 95 W., channel 04, Vertical: 3780 MHz. Test pattern begins
at 9:30 a.m. A live videostream of the program can also be viewed
at: http://caheinfo.wsu.edu/video/stream.html.
Our
February program will feature a look at the updated "College
Knowledge for Adults" program, the latest iteration of the
very successful "College Knowledge for Women" program
that we featured in one of our "Extension Engaged" Programs
last year. This will again be an evening program, which will take
place on February 6, from 6:30-8:00 pm and will be hosted by Debra
Kollock.
Our
March program will focus on a look at the new national standards
for organically grown foods and will feature Jim Riddle, from the
national organic agriculture standards board. This program will
take place on March 21, from 10:00 am to noon, Pacific time.
We're
working a number of other possible program ideas that have been
suggested by a number of you and are being explored with subject
matter specialists and our program leaders. These include a number
of topics within the Master Gardener program, a program on the issue
of police bias and racial profiling, one on bullying among young
children, one on child obesity and several others. If you have an
idea for a topic for a future "Extension Engaged" program,
please send your idea to Scott Fedale.
ATTENTION
PARENTS:
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DEPENDENTS OF WSU FACULTY AND STAFF
As high school seniors are getting ready to apply for college,
this is a reminder that the $1,000 scholarship available to dependents
of qualifying faculty and staff is also available (thanks to the
WSU Foundation) to qualifying county-paid Extension staff. These
scholarships are for entering, full-time, undergraduate students
who have not exceeded age 25. Spouses are not eligible. The awards
are renewable for a second year if the student is making satisfactory
progress towards a degree and has a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above
at WSU.
Only
dependents of the following are eligible to apply:
-
WSU classified staff members holding half time or greater appointments
and having permanent status or on trial service.
- County-paid
staff members having permanent status and working half time or
more for Cooperative Extension.
- Faculty
and A/P employees holding half time or greater appointments.
The
deadline for this scholarship is in March 1, 2003, but applications
should be made at the same time as application for admission. Applications
must be made on the WSU Application for Academic Scholarships form.
This is available on the WSU
Web site or from the Applications menu on the financial
aid Web page.
When
applying, the student should indicate in #12 of the scholarship
application that their parent is an employee.
County-paid
employees with dependents applying for this scholarship must apply
for "public affiliate status" with the university. Contact
Rebecca Armstrong for
that.
WEMIS,
AICS, and ANNUAL REPORTING REMINDER
All
extension faculty and A/Ps who do programs, must have WEMIS reports
complete by the end of December. Unless everyone reports, the data
are almost useless. AICS reports must be complete by Friday, January
17th.
Instructions
and guidance about ANNUAL REVIEWS was sent out this week to allext
email listserve. However, don't wait for the due date to begin entering
AICS reports. Extension faculty are required to report to AICS in
(at a minimum) the Scholarly Activity and Extension -> Programs/Projects
categories. A/Ps with program assignments may submit their own AICS
reports, or can be part of a team, and have their report initiated
by the team leader. Extension faculty merit ratings will reflect
whether or not all required reports have been submitted.
This
is a reminder that the end of the year is coming and WEMIS must
be up to date by then. Instructions and guidance about annual reports
to AICS and annual reviews will be coming out soon. Extension faculty
and A/Ps with program assignments are required to report to WEMIS
and to AICS in (at a minimum) the Scholarly Activity and Extension
-> Programs/Projects categories. Extension faculty merit ratings
will reflect whether or not all required reports have been submitted.
