REDESIGNED
CE HOME PAGE LAUNCHED
The
newly designed Web page for WSU Cooperative Extension is now active.
The new page has a number of new features, including links to "Other
Extension Services," Colleges", a "site map"
of all the links on the site, a "related links" item providing
links to several federal and state sites, a direct link to the Distance
Degree program, an "I want to Give" link to enable individuals
to make donations to various CE programs and a main page for "faculty
and staff," which has links to several other items not appearing
on the main CE page, such as "AICS", "Extension Update,"
and a link to information about the land grant university system.
Another
new feature you'll notice on the main page is the photo collage,
with links to "Program Information" and "more photos."
We want to feature a different Extension program each month, so
if you'd like your program featured, send at least five digital
photos of your program in action, with captions for each photo,
as well as a one or two paragraph write up about your program, its
recent accomplishments, plans for the future, etc. to Scott
Fedale and we'll try to include as many of these as we can over
the next year.

CEEPS
UNIT MOVES TO INFORMATION DEPARTMENT
The Cooperative Extension Events and Program Support (CEEPS)
unit has been relocated from being an independent unit in Extension
Administration to a unit in the Information Department. This move
took place for efficiencies identified by an ad hoc committee that's
been meeting since spring. The committee (Rob McDaniel, Scott Fedale,
Nancy Sanders, Wayne Madsen, Linda Fox, and Don Holbrook) identified
long-term and short-term actions to pull together publications,
video, web/computing, media, conferences/professional development,
and fiscal support for these conference services. Many improved
services can be achieved by the relocation, such as online conference
registration, credit card registration, improved brochure development
and marketing, Web site support for conferences, to name a few.
Additionally, we are launching the search for a new CEEPS Program
Administrative Manager. Nancy Sanders formerly held this position.
Nancy has relocated to Spokane to provide ledership for the Food
Sense program in Spokane County and continue some support for Partners
for Rural Improvement (PRI). We will be forming an advisory board
of users of the CEEPS unit to assist in directing the transition
and orienting the new manager. We'll keep you posted.
1-800
REVERSE TOLL NUMBER ENDED JULY 1ST
We're
still getting people surprised regarding this change. While this
was announced three times in the "Friday Update" beginning
May 10th, for some individuals this is still "news."
Beginning
July 1, 2002, the WSU Cooperative Extension "Reverse Toll"
(or 1-800 Wats line) was discontinued. Traditionally, we have provided
this "Reverse Toll" to allow people to read their email
while traveling. Unfortunately, a 1-800 telephone number is not
free. It simply reverses the toll charges so that someone else pays.
This year, the "Reverse Toll" Wats line will cost Cooperative
Extension over $45,000. Consequently, the decision was made to eliminate
this general service.
As
of now, alternative options include:
- -User
or department obtains their own 800 number that can point to our
RAS dialup number.
Toll numbers cost 25.00 to install and are billed 5.00/month.
Domestic long distance rates for calling in are $ 0.14/minute.
International connection to this service requires a calling card
and the rates vary by location/country. Contact Kathy Vogeler,
Information Technology representative for CAHE (509 335-0483)
for this option.
- Information
Technology has established a discount contract with Aicent, a
global Internet provider, to offer affordable remote on-line access
to University personnel traveling to domestic or international
locations.
- Aicent
service provides cost-effective access for the occasional traveler
or infrequent user of the Internet.
- The
procedure for requesting Remote Internet Access Service is located
in the BPPM 80.40, or contact the IT PhoneDesk (335-3663, ITB2088).
For rates go to http://www.wsu.edu/IT/TeleCom.
- User
obtain their own local Internet Service Provider (ISP). Some ISPs
offer nation wide or regional service.
For
questions about this policy, contact Linda Fox, and for assistance
with the technology, contact Tony Wright.
