STAFFING SHIFTS

The expansion of both food stamp nutrition education and diabetes education are strategic priorities for Extension family living programs. Staffing changes are being made to facilitate these expansion efforts.

We are shifting Elaine Mayes' responsibilities into statewide leadership for the Food Sense program (which includes both EFNEP and Food Stamp Nutrition Education). At the same time, Sue Butkus will reduce the time she devotes to Food Sense in order to focus more energy on the expansion of diabetes education. Spokane County will backfill behind Elaine to staff county responsibilties for EFNEP.

Elaine is well prepared to take on these new responsibilities. She has 20 years experience in EFNEP and 4 years with the FSNEP program. She has already been involved in statewide activities for these programs, working with FSNEP Program Coordinator Kathleen Manenica on evaluation and recordkeeping systems. Elaine's major responsibilities will be expansion of the FSNEP program, working on development of the 2003 FSNEP contract, and stategic planning for the direction of the Food Sense program. She will also be laying the groundwork for development and adoption of a new curriculum for low income nutrition education programs.

We will evaluate the effectiveness of these staffing changes in one year to determine whether the structure is working well both for the faculty and staff, and for the overall programs. We are grateful to Elaine, Sue and Kathleen for their commitment to low income nutrition programs and their flexibility in taking on new responsibilities to aid in our expansion efforts.
